About the film "White Nights"

The director of "White Nights" I. Pyriev has already shared with moviegoers his thoughts about the film adaptation of this work by F. Dostoevsky.

This is because only very few fragments of the city have preserved some more features of the color of the past. We tried to take a general panorama of the city from St. Isaac's Cathedral, but no matter how hard the operator tried to get rid of the abundance of factory pipes with all sorts of optical tricks, nothing came of it.



That's why more than 90 percent of the film had to be shot in complex large-scale scenery and resorted to the help of layouts.



Leningraders, having seen the events taking place on the embankment in the film, will find it difficult to specify their exact address. This is because our architectural creativity has manifested itself here. We tried to create a collective image of the old capital. Therefore, for example, the grating of the embankment is taken from one place, and the lantern is from another. And yet this is St. Petersburg. It is unlikely that even experts will determine where the episode was filmed — on location or in the pavilion.



The background of the events on the embankment is a huge, four-story high, flat decoration. But the operator has achieved with his art that the painted buildings look voluminous on the screen.



A 70-meter-long stage set was installed for the duel scene. And to shoot the rain scene, Mosfilm built a grandiose structure: a canal surrounded by a bridge with boats floating on it.



Experience shows that an action shot continuously in one set is boring for the viewer if it does not fit into 150-200 meters of film. And the shots of the embankment occupy about 400 meters in the film. We all had to work hard to diversify the mise en scene and shooting points, choose different parts of the scenery, vary the medium, close-ups, details.
